Wiff Rudd is a native Texan from San Antonio now living in Woodway, Texas with his wife Jeanette. Their three adult sons and their families reside in North Carolina, Washington, and Texas.

Wiff joined the faculty of Baylor University’s School of Music in 2002 as Professor of Trumpet and Brass Area Coordinator. During his time at Baylor, Wiff has received an Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching and was named the 2010 Centennial Professor which provided a grant for the writing of his book, Collaborative Practice Concepts. In 2020, he self-published Side by Side: Building and Sustaining an Effective Community in the Music Studio. He is the 2021 recipient of the Elizabeth Vardaman Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduates.

From 1998-2002 he was Associate Professor of Music at the University of Arkansas, principal trumpet of the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Boston Mountain Chamber Players. He served as Assistant Professor of Music at Oklahoma Baptist University from 1978-1985, performing regularly with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra. Wiff received music degrees from Baylor University (BME) and the University of Northern Colorado (MM). His primary mentors include Ron Fox, William Pfund, and the late Michael Ewald and Larry Skinner.

From 1985-1993 Wiff toured internationally with the Dallas Brass and is a founding member (1993) and manager of Rhythm & Brass. He performs and records with the Baylor Brass, is principal trumpet of the Waco Symphony, and often serves as an extra/substitute musician with the symphony orchestras of Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, Austin, Harrisburg, and regional orchestras throughout Texas. An active soloist, he enjoys collaborating with orchestras and wind bands, has participated in numerous composition commissions, and has been a featured artist in several Carnegie Hall concerts.

Wiff has presented clinics and performances on five continents, at more than 300 universities domestically and abroad, at various trumpet festivals, the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the Texas Music Educators Association Conference, the National Trumpet Competition, and International Trumpet Guild Conferences. He has adjudicated numerous solo competitions and has performed with Rhythm & Brass at the New York Brass Conference, the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute Bands of America/Music for All, the Brevard Music Center, the Great American Brass Band Festival and numerous state music conventions.

Former students may be found studying in notable graduate schools, attending summer music festivals, teaching in public schools throughout Texas, and performing in various symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles as well as premier and regional military bands across the country. The Baylor Trumpet Studio has been enthusiastically involved in the National Trumpet Competition and International Trumpet Guild competitions for many years with multiple finalists in both organizations’ events. Baylor trumpet ensembles have won eleven prizes at NTC including six first-place wins.

Wiff is a member of the National Trumpet Competition Executive Board and is affiliated with the International Trumpet Guild, the Texas Music Educators Association and has been a Yamaha Performing Artist since 1988.
